    דמותו רבת-העוצמה של אליהו מצויה במרכזם של כמה מן הפרקים הסוערים ביותר בסיפור המקראי. מדיניות הפעולה של הנביא בדור שבו פעל עוררה לעתים התנגדות ומחאה בקרב האישים שעמם בא במגע. שאלה עיקרית העומדת לפני המעיין בסיפורים אלו היא עד כמה זוכה מדיניותו של הנביא, ככל שהיא פרי יוזמתו שלו, להסכמת משלחו.

    לכל יחידה סיפורית מוקדשת בספר זה סדרת עיונים. בהצטרפם זה לזה, יוצרים העיונים הללו מסכת פרשנית שיש בה קריאה צמודה של הסיפור הנידון. עם זאת, כל עיון עוסק בנושא משלו, וניתן לקראו בפני עצמו. את הספר פרקי אליהו משלים הספר פרקי אלישע, המבאר את פרקי הנביא אלישע בספר מלכים. שני הספרים יצאו לאור לראשונה בהוצאת "מעליות", וכעת הם מופיעים במהדורה חדשה.

    אלחנן סמט שימש כר"מ בישיבת "ברכת משה" במעלה אדומים, ומכהן כיום כמרצה בכיר במכללת הרצוג שעל יד ישיבת הר עציון. לצד עיסוקו בהוראה הוא עוסק גם בכתיבה. ספריו האחרים, המופיעים עתה גם הם במהדורות חדשות ב"ידיעות ספרים", הם: עיונים בפרשות השבוע (סדרה ראשונה וסדרה שנייה), ויד לרמב"ם – עיונים בפסקי הרמב"ם ביד החזקה.
